Conventions

  • Early closes. An early close’s close_time is when normal trading ends, in the calendar’s local time, as 24-hour HH:MM. It isn’t the end of a closing auction: SGX is 12:00, NZX 12:45, NYSE 13:00.
  • Weekend working days. Some countries move a working day onto a weekend (China and South Korea around long holidays, for example). Those days are recorded as weekend_workday and count as business days.
  • Observed days. When a holiday falls on a weekend and is moved, the moved day is marked observed: true. Whether a calendar observes it follows the official rule: the Federal Reserve stays open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, so USD doesn’t close then while the NYSE does.
  • Weekends. Each calendar has its own weekend, with dates: the UAE moved from Friday-Saturday to Saturday-Sunday in 2022, and the calendar records both.
  • Statutory holidays only. Country calendars hold public holidays set by law, not one-off closures such as an executive order giving federal employees a day off.
